When do you make a relationship "official"?

You've been dating for a while and your close friends and family knows how you feel about your partner, but when do you make it 'official', tell everyone, and introduce the other person as your girlfriend/boyfriend?

It's a choice every couple makes at some point. Sometimes it flows naturally from the time you both develop feelings for each other; other times you might decide to wait a while before telling the world about your new relationship. It really depends on the two of you and surrounding circumstances.

Reasons couples wait

People usually let a bit of time pass before making a new relationship 'official' until both people "feel" the time is right. There could be many reasons for this: perhaps waiting until you know the relationship is long-term; sometimes it's a cultural thing - waiting to tell your family and closest friends first before making your relationship known to the wider world; or it could be for any other number of reasons. In some cases, couples may even introduce each other as just a "friend" for some time when they are in fact dating or in a relationship for various reasons. Other times, couples might decide not to make any "official" announcement, be together, and just let things flow.

Most importantly, the choice and time is something both you and your partner should be happy with.

Telling people

In the world of Facebook and social networking, making a relationship 'official' to the world takes just a couple of clicks and before long everyone knows.

People will often inform their family and closest friends first - and most likely after they have met the other person and some time has passed.

Before long, you'll be going out and introducing one another as each other's partner.
