Tips for staying safe when clubbing
Here's a couple of things you and your friends can do when going out clubbing to help you stay safe in various situations. Most importantly, before you head out, make sure people know where you'll be and what you plan to do, especially if you're planning to meet friends at an agreed location before your night begins.
- Avoiding drink spiking: Always keep an eye on your drinks from the moment they're made. This is especially important when you're overseas. If something doesn't look or taste right, don't drink it.
- Alcohol limitations: Avoid drinking more than you can handle. Not only does excessive drinking affect your health, but you're also putting your personal safety at risk when you go home.
- Self defence: Take self defence classes. Good classes will not only teach you practical self defence skills but also theory on staying safe.
- Walking: Walk in groups. If you have no other choice and have to walk by yourself, walk with confidence to make yourself look like less of a target. Stay in busy areas. Maintain awareness of your surroundings. Don't listen to music, text on your phone or do any activity that can affect your awareness. Trust your instincts - if something doesn't feel right, avoid the situation.
- Avoid dangerous situations: Keep away from people or groups exhibiting any unusual, dangerous or rowdy behaviour.
- Driving: Park in busy, well-lit areas that will remain that way throughout the night. Check there is no one in, or acting suspiciously around your car. Lock your car's doors as soon as you get in. Don't drink and drive.
- Public transport: If catching the train, avoid empty carriages. If catching a bus or ferry, sit as close as possible to the driver or onboard staff.
- Mobile: Fully charge your mobile phone before your night out starts. If it's a pre-paid plan ensure it has sufficient credit. While calls to emergency services might always be free, sometimes staying safe might involve having to contact a friend or family member for which you'll need to pay to make the call.
- Money & personal belongings: Keep extra money in a safe place away from your wallet. Don't keep your wallet and keys together. Hold your handbag so it's either in front of you or so you are aware if anyone tries to interfere with it.
- Electronic security and identity theft: Especially when clubbing overseas, when paying by credit or debit card, keep an eye on your card at all times to avoid skimming. Some venues scan or photograph your ID upon entry. Satisfy yourself that your data will remain safe. If you don't trust the venue's policy, staff or equipment, go elsewhere.
- Personal details: Don't give away unnecessary personal details to people you've only just met like your address or where you work.
- Drugs: Avoid drugs of any kind.
