Money at Schoolies
Schoolies might be the first time you've been living away from home for a while, and it's a good idea to plan to budget. If you eat out for every meal, go out at night, pay for transport and entertainment, plus factor in how much you've paid for your accommodation and bond, you can be spending a fairly large amount of money.
It's a good idea to budget before you start your Schoolies experience - allocate how much you'll spend each day and stick to it. Try to keep some money in reserve for emergencies.
To help you save:
- Buy groceries rather than eat out - you'll save heaps. The price of instant meals can add up as well - but staple foods like meat, vegetables, fruit, breads and cereals can help keep your costs down.
- Avoid buying your groceries at convenience stores - they're the most expensive. Rather choose discount like Aldi - you'll save heaps.
- Go to free activities rather than paid ones. There are heaps to choose from.
- Take out small amounts of cash from ATMs each day. If you keep all your money in your wallet at once you'll spend more.
- Keep an emergency reserve of money on you away from your wallet in case it gets lost or stolen. Under an insole in your shoe or sock is a good place.
Know your rights to a refund. Keep your receipts. In most cases you're entitled to a refund if a product is fault you did not know about at the time of purchase, is different from a sample shown, damaged, or unfit for their purpose.
